ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To analyze the association of excessive work and compulsive work with the dimensions of the burnout syndrome in masters and doctoral professors of Languages, Literature, and Linguistics in Brazil. METHODS Cross-sectional study carried out with 585 permanent professors of stricto sensu graduate studies in Languages, Literature, and Linguistics in Brazil. Data collection took place between February and August 2019, by an online questionnaire. The outcomes of this study were the compulsive work and excessive work dimensions of the Dutch Work Addiction Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory TM dimensions and their associated factors, identified by multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS Professors with a high level of excessive work (29.40%) had 2.75 times the chance of high emotional exhaustion and 2.08 times the chance of high depersonalization. Regarding professors with a high level of compulsive work (8.03%), they had 4.88 times the chance of high emotional exhaustion and 2.97 times the chance of high depersonalization. No association of excessive work and compulsive work with low professional fulfillment was identified. CONCLUSION The results showed a statistically significant association of excessive work and compulsive work with high emotional exhaustion and high depersonalization, allowing managers and professors to reflect the criteria that guide their work processes, to adopt management models, institutional regulatory policies, and strategies to improve the working conditions and health of professors.

ABSTRACT

Stressors are a set of si-tuations that trigger physical and mental consequences on health personnel; they are generated from a minimal circum-stance and become a major problem that will affect both the health of nurses and their professional performance. Objec-tive: The objective was to analyze the factors that influence the stress of nurses who work at the Basic Hospital of Esme-raldas IESS. Materials and methods: it was carried out under a field study and a descriptive scope. The population and sample consisted of 30 nursing professio-nals who work in the emergency area of the mentioned hospital. The data on the factors that generate stress in this heal-th professional was obtained through a survey and as a tool, a questionnaire ad-dressed to nursing personnel in the emer-gency area. In addition, direct observation was used and as an instrument, an obser-vation guide to analyze the nurses' work environment and finally the interview te-chnique was applied with a script of ques-tions to the leader of the emergency ser-vice. Results: the stressors found were exhaustion, insomnia, work overload, job dissatisfaction, insufficient space; the most prevalent consequences genera-ted by stress are poor diet, insomnia and hair loss. Conclusions: stressors cause instability in nurses' health, conflicts with the health team and trigger poor care for users(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to investigate whether stress found in activities performed by Brazilian police workers is associated with the risk of developing a temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome (TMD), a disorder that is commonly associated with stressful conditions. An integrative literature review on stress, TMD and police work was carried out. We identified several stressors in the work of Brazilian police officers and observed that stress influences the development, aggravation and treatment of TMD symptoms. The quality of life and health of TMD carriers is compromised. The fact that studies have shown the association between stress and activities carried out by Brazilian police officers, as well as between stress and TMD, has led to the assumption of a possible relationship between stress caused by police work and the risk of these workers developing TMD. It is recommended that individuals be thoroughly examined before being treated and that such treatment be multidisciplinary. The literature on TMD in police workers is still incipient, which is why we recommend the development of further studies on the topic.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Professional Burnout Syndrome is a response to chronic work stress, which results from the failure of the strategies to treat these situations. Objective: To determine the frequency of Professional Burnout Syndrome and the behaviour of its three components in the doctors of the Pediatric Teaching Hospital of Cerro. Material and method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 45 doctors from a universe of 65 professionals who worked during the month of March 2018. Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) was used. They were classified as presenting Professional Burnout Syndrome when the three sections had very high figures. The individuals that demonstrated to have low degrees were classified as not prone to the syndrome; those that reached an average degree in some dimension were considered moderately prone; the ones that showed a high degree as well as other groups with average and low degrees were assessed as highly prone to presenting the aforementioned syndrome. Simple proportions and central tendency measures were used for the analysis. Results: A 100 of answers were obtained; 6.7 percent of those evaluated presented Professional Burnout Syndrome; 31.1 percent were evaluated as not prone. The rest of the population showed to be moderately prone (26.6 percent) and a 35.5 percent was considered highly prone. Conclusions: It is important to take into account and evaluate the existence of this syndrome which, although it demonstrates to have a low frequency, it shows a great potential danger of developing the syndrome in more than half of the population studied(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the relationship between the frequency of work-related stress and prevalence of functional dyspepsia in a sample of 218 military older 50 years in 2010 in Lima Military Hospital Geriatric. ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study are: to identify musculoskeletal and joint symptoms in undergraduate nursing students and to relate the onset or exacerbation of symptoms to activities developed in hospital care practice. Quantitative, analytical, observational case- control approach with Survey methodology. A sample of 127 undergraduate nursing students from a federal public university in the city of Rio de Janeiro, 56 students from the fifth and sixth period (case group) and 71 from the first and second period (control group). The results showed a homogeneous group with similarity of sociodemographic characteristics. Of the 127 students surveyed, 115 reported having one or more musculoskeletal and joint symptoms. The lumbar spine, shoulders and legs were the regions most affected by the case group and in the control group were the cervical spine, shoulders and knees. Pain was the predominant symptom in both groups. The aggravating situations of symptoms in the case group were postural problems, overload, stage and stress and in the control group were posture, overload and stress. Of the 54 students in the case group, 48 have their symptoms aggravated during or after the curricular internship, including low back pain. Among the activities that most contribute to the aggravation of symptoms are: bathing in the bed, mobilizing the patient, standing for a long time, physical exertion, staying in the same position and dressing. It was concluded that daily hospital care activities exacerbate musculoskeletal and joint symptoms, with pain being the most frequent symptom in nursing students.
